The Great Houston Evacuation

September 22nd -23rd, 2005

Because the Hurricane was forecast to be heading just to the west of Houston with >135 mile-winds, we chose to evacuate Houston because the damage would have knocked out the infrastructure, which meant no electricity for weeks...without AC in 90 degree heat is dangerous. So, we departed for Albuquerque around 4:00 AM Friday morning. We gathered up extra gas, food and water. We took the Expedition and David drove his Dodge in close tandem. I had Mary, Nancy, and Dean, plus the computer CPUs, the important papers' file box, and our golf clubs, etc. David carried Jennifer and Jessica and their bags. We immediately ran into traffic.

After being on the road for 8 hours and had not traveled more than 30 miles west, and after hearing that the storm was starting to veer east somewhat (directly over Houston, this made things even more imperative that we keep moving but the traffic was only moving at about 1 mile per hour. After a rest at a local church along the road, we heard that the storm was coming across Beaumont and Lake Charles just to the east of us but that we were still in the western edge of it so we moved back into traffic through the night and next morning. Folks who didn't think to get extra gasoline, water, and food, thinking they would be available along the way, began to line the 2 major freeways westward as their cars and trucks ran out of gas or overheated and seized. Tens of thousands of people were stuck along the highways not knowing what to do....so they just waited...some for at least 36 hours. About 18 hours later, we arrived in Austin and decided to stay in Austin with Uncle Jimmy Wiley and Clarie and Mark. Aunt Kay came by for a visit as well.

The storm had moved east of Houston so Austin was as far away as we needed to be. For a trip that normally would have taken about 3 hours, the trip took us 26 hours from the time we left home. After a few days in Austin, we returned to Houston in 3 hours with normal traffic as if nothing had happened, not before realizing that the Expedition's fuel pump was beginning to fail just before we were to leave for Houston. However, we were close to a Ford dealership and, after $ 2,300.00 and 4 hrs. to replace the fuel pump, a few cooked spark plugs and wiring, and a turn-signal that failed from overuse, we left Austin. We returned home to find only a few tree limbs down and lots of leaves on the ground but again nothing of significance, as if nothing had happened. We understood from our neighbors that there was almost no rain but a constant wind of about 25 to 35 miles per hour over an 8-hr period. So, I guess nothing really did happen in Houston...but it had for us and 3.2 million other Houston and Galveston folks trying to do the same thing at the same time to avoid a major storm.

We are thinking about moving to Austin or maybe even Seattle.
