In January, 2006, FoxNews26 caught up with Mr. Campbell on the first tee at a golf course in Houston to enlist his opinions about the recent Sego Mine disaster in West Virginia. During the interview that followed he stressed that it made no sense to expose humans to such inherently dangerous environmental conditions encountered in mining underground coal in methane-rich areas, when nuclear power is available to replace environmentally-damaging sources of energy such as coal and natural gas to power the U.S. electrical grid. He indicated that mining underground coal specifically has become untenable from a safety point of view, and coal use in general has become outdated because of its impact on global warming and associated environmental concerns, i.e., carbon dioxide, mercury, etc.
As Chairman of the Uranium Committee of the Energy-Minerals Division of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), he released a report in early 2005 that concluded that re-developing nuclear energy to generate power for the American electical grid is appropriate and needed as soon as possible. A few months later, Mr. Campbell was invited to expand on his views on the subject at the Rocky Mountain Natural Gas Strategy Conference & Investment Forum, Session 1: Energy Supply - Quantities and Qualities, Organized by the Colorado Oil & Gas Association, August 1, 2005, held in Denver, Colorado.
