See Notes. NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking. NO contact with strong oxidizing agents. NO contact with hot surfaces. Shut off supply; if not possible and no risk to surroundings, let the fire burn itself out; in other cases extinguish with water spray. If extinguished, risk of explosive re-ignition. Fire fighters should wear complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. EXPLOSION Gas/air mixtures are explosive. Closed system, ventilation, explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting. Use non-sparking handtools. Prevent build-up of electrostatic charges (e.g., by grounding). In case of fire: keep cylinder cool by spraying with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position. EXPOSURE AVOID ALL CONTACT! IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR! INHALATION Abdominal pain, confusion, drowsiness, headache, digestive problems nausea. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes). Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection. Fresh air, rest, half-upright position, artificial respiration if indicated, and refer for medical attention. SKIN MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness, roughness, liquid causes skin burns, blisters. Protective gloves. Remove contaminated clothes, rinse skin with plenty of water or shower, and refer for medical attention. EYES Liquid splashes can cause redness, conjuctivitis, severe deep burns. Safety goggles or eye protection in combination with breathing protection. First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor. INGESTION SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING Evacuate danger area! Consult an expert! Ventilation. Eliminate ignition sources and stop flow of gas if possible (extra personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus). Separated from strong oxidants, aluminium, food and feedstuffs, rubbers. Cool. Store outside or in separate building. Do not transport with food and feedstuffs. PHYSICAL DANGERS: The gas is heavier than air, and may travel along the ground; distant ignition possible. CHEMICAL DANGERS: Upon heating, toxic fumes are formed. Reacts with strong oxidants, aluminium and rubber. OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs): TLV: ppm; 5 mg/m3 19 (skin) (ACGIH 1991-1992). OSHA PEL: TWA 200 ppm (890 mg/m3) NIOSH REL: See Appendix D NIOSH IDLH: 2000 ppm ROUTES OF EXPOSURE: The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and through the skin. INHALATION RISK: A harmful concentration of this gas in the air will be reached very quickly on loss of containment. On loss of containment this gas can cause suffocation by lowering the oxygen content of the air in confined areas. EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE: The substance irritates the respiratory tract. Inhalation of gas may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system , resulting in psychological disturbances. Exposure to the substance could cause lowering of consciousness. Exposure by inhalation may result in death. EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE: Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis. Lungs may be affected by repeated or prolonged exposure resulting in bronchospasms. The substance may have effects on the central nervous system, liver and kidney , resulting in paralysis, pschychological disorders, hallucinations, brain damage and impaired kidney and liver function.
